Wyatt Russell Should Play Kurt Russell’s Character In Yellowstone Flashbacks

Kurt Russell’s casting in the Yellowstone spinoff, The Madison, sets up an incredible opportunity for an MCU star. Following Yellowstone’s ending last year, Taylor Sheridan has been hard at work making sure the flame doesn’t go out, with multiple spinoffs in production.

This includes sequel series focused on Kayce Dutton, Beth and Rip, and an all-new ensemble of characters in The Madison. The show is set to feature Michelle Pfeiffer as the lead character, with actors Matthew Fox, Patrick J. Adams, and more joining her. It was recently announced that Kurt Russell would be joining The Madison’s cast.

With Kurt Russell and Wyatt Russell teaming up for Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, bringing them back together in a different way for the Yellowstone franchise could be exciting. Taylor Sheridan’s shows have benefited from the involvement of veteran movie stars, but this could be an opportunity for a young star to carve out his own place.

Wyatt Russell has had a successful career so far, but playing Kurt Russell’s The Madison character in flashbacks could bring him a totally unique challenge with future possibilities, given how rapidly the franchise is expanding. We don’t even know who Kurt Russell will be playing just yet, but if it’s anything like the characters played by Kevin Costner and Billy Bob Thornton, I’m all in.

The Yellowstone Franchise Has Consistently Utilized Flashbacks

Yellowstone used flashbacks to expand its story fairly consistently throughout the show’s five seasons, allowing a glimpse at a younger version of John Dutton. The series even featured Forrie J. Smith’s son as the younger version of Lloyd, so there’s precedence for Wyatt Russell to star.

Of course, casting a big-name actor like Wyatt Russell for flashbacks would mean putting more emphasis on those scenes. Perhaps they could be used as a backdoor pilot, much like the 1883 flashbacks in Yellowstone season 4, which showed Tim McGraw’s James Dutton in the 19th century.

Between 1923’s ending and the flashbacks we’ve already seen in Yellowstone, there’s plenty of room for story. Taylor Sheridan is apparently working on a 1944 spinoff, but there are still plenty of gaps where flashbacks could pave the way for integral storytelling in this franchise. One curiosity with The Madison, after all, is how it connects to Yellowstone.

Sure, the show will be set in Montana, not too far from the Dutton Ranch, but establishing ties between the show’s characters and the Duttons from the past could be incredible. There’s so much potential for Wyatt Russell in The Madison and the Yellowstone franchise.
