Sherrie Hewson has played a number of iconic soap characters over the years and the Loose Women legend has revealed she’d love to join Eastenders as a “evil” character

Sherrie Hewson has expressed her interest in joining EastEnders following the dramatic exit of her character from Hollyoaks earlier this week.

The Loose Women star, 75, portrayed Martha Blake on the Channel 4 soap for a span of 17 months before her character met a gruesome end at the hands of her serial killer son Jez Blake (Jeremy Sheffield).

Reflecting on her final scenes, which were broadcast last week, Sherrie commented: “It was quite spectacular, unexpected and it was horrific more than anything else.”

Sherrie is no stranger to soaps, having previously played Maureen Holdsworth in Coronation Street from 1993 until 1997 and again in 2006, as well as Lesley Meredith in Emmerdale from 2004 until 2006.

However, the actress hasn’t dismissed the idea of joining the BBC soap opera EastEnders in the future.

Discussing the possibility of appearing in Albert Square, Sherrie told Reach PLC: “I’m not sure who I’d play but they can write anything can’t they.

“My mate Harriet Thorpe is in that, she plays Elaine [Peacock] who I love, so I’d love to go in as her sister or an evil something or other and be really horrible to her.

“I’d love to do that with Harriet because we’re really good friends, that would be something I’d like to do.”

This comes after Sherrie voiced her belief that older television viewers are being treated like “coffin dodgers”and there needs to be more visibility of mature actors and actresses on screen.

She expressed: “Today’s TV so often chases the young and forgets the rest but for many of us, the joy of great television has always been simple – you just watch a show and you laugh, or you don’t. Funny is funny.

“Look at the adverts on television, you never see older people in adverts unless they’re in a funeral parlour or a cremation or life insurance. It’s like we’re being treated like coffin dodgers or something.”

In addition to her roles in Britain’s biggest soaps, Sherrie also portrayed Joyce Temple Savage in Benidorm and was a regular panellist on Loose Women.
