New ‘S.W.A.T’ Spin-Off Will Be Majorly Inspired by This $1.5 Billion Action Blockbuster

The last few months have been a rollercoaster ride for S.W.A.T. fans who, after having their hearts shattered by an official cancellation, rejoiced with the news that the title would be returning in the form of an offshoot. That spin-off, titled S.W.A.T.: Exiles, will follow Shemar Moore’s Hondo as he leaves the familiar world he’s long known behind and steps into more of a mentor role. But, his new position won’t come without its own set of trials and tribulations, with TV Line recently sharing an update surrounding the project’s official plot. Back in June, Sony Pictures TV President Katherine Pope teased that the first season would look similar to Top Gun: Maverick, with the news publication echoing her description, revealing that “One of the untested and unpredictable young recruits I told you about last week has a secret beef with — wait for it — team leader Hondo.”

In case you missed last week’s character rollout, there are plenty of fresh and different personalities set to be joining the alpha leader in the upcoming series. The title is overflowing with powerful presences, like that of an amputee who graduated at the top of her class and who will do anything to get out from behind the lackluster world of desk work, as well as an ex-beauty queen who now finds herself on the front lines of law enforcement. There’s also a Black ex-marine from the South Central neighborhood of Los Angeles who is overflowing with charisma, and an undercover cop who comes with baggage after a controversial shooting in his past. Finally, there’s an up-and-coming tactical star who needs some serious work on his social skills. If these descriptions can give us any indication of who might clash with Hondo, we’d put our money on the tactical prodigy who’s lacking in social skills.

What About the Original ‘S.W.A.T.’ Cast?

Shemar Moore as Hondo in SWAT smiles at something off-screen.

As of right now, Moore is the only confirmed member of the original team that is set to return for S.W.A.T.: Exiles. The actor’s casting drummed up quite a bit of drama from both fans of the eight-season-running production and those closest to it. But, none of that got under the star’s skin, as Moore stood by his decision to move forward with the new project all on his own. However, recent comments made by Sony Pictures Television Chairman, Keith LeGoy, give plenty of promise for the potential for crossover appearances, as he revealed:

“There is a S.W.A.T family and that family is important. We would love to have other family members involved in some way, whether it’s all of them all of the time, some of them some of the time, or something in between. That’s something that we are still figuring out.”
