Kevin Costner Traded a Cowboy Hat for a Fedora in This Gangster Epic Heading To a Free Streamer

YellowstoneDances With WolvesWyatt Earp — when a Western project is offered or dreamt up by Kevin Costner, there’s no way he can back out of it. The multi-hyphenate performer has a natural knack for all things cowboy hats and shootout duels, and has even sunk heaps of his own money into keeping the dream alive for his genre epic, Horizon: An American Saga. But all that’s not to say that the man will shy away from gunslingers of other backgrounds. In 1987, Costner ditched his cowboy hat and rancher gear to pick up a fedora and three-piece suit and appeared in Brian De Palma’s star-studded gangster epic, The Untouchables. If you’re a late-to-the-game Costner fan or just someone who is in desperate need of a fantastic crime film that loosely pulls its story from history, we’ve got great news for you as the film is set for a Tubi arrival on December 1.

Released in 1987, The Untouchables was the heyday of De Palma’s work surrounding organized crime syndicates, having previously released Wise Guys the year before, and the fan-favorite Al Pacino-led gangster flick, Scarface, in 1983. Blending fact with fiction, the film’s writer, David Mamet (Hannibal), pulled some of the story from Oscar Fraley’s book of the same name as well as the real-life events that centered around the main characters. Starring as legendary agent Eliot Ness, Costner led a stacked ensemble in a movie about Ness’ formation of the law enforcement team known as the Untouchables who attempted to bring justice to mafioso Al Capone (Robert De Niro) during the years of Prohibition.

Along with Costner and De Niro, The Untouchables featured plenty of knockout performances from several other major players, including Sean Connery (Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade), Charles Martin Smith (American Graffiti), and Andy García (The Godfather Part III). With a production budget of $25 million, De Palma’s hard-hitting crime flick became a hit at the box office, earning a whopping $106.2 million during its time in cinemas. It was also a favorite on the awards circuit and was nominated for four Academy Awards, with Connery taking home the trophy for Best Supporting Actor.

With a multitude of negative stories coming out about Costner and his time on Yellowstone, including more light being shed on the fascinatingly petty rift between him and universe creator, Taylor Sheridan, the celebrated actor has largely stayed out of the public eye. After the disastrous release of the first chapter in his four-part Horizon: An American Saga, it seems like he’s gone back to the drawing board to recalculate the project despite the second film being completely finished.
