Who Is the New Guy on Olivia Benson’s Squad on ‘Law & Order: SVU’? What to Know

Corey Cott plays Detective Jake Griffin, a new character who may be a friend or foe of Capt. Olivia Benson as he adjusts to life under her command.

Jake Griffin is a new detective on the squad in “Law & Order: SVU,” but which side is he working for?

The second episode of Season 27, which aired Oct. 2, introduces Griffin, played by Corey Cott, as he gets off to a turbulent start under the command of Mariska Hargitay’s Capt. Olivia Benson.

Cott previously appeared on the show in Season 18 as a perpetrator named Ellis Griffin.

Here’s what to know about the new character.

Detective Jake Griffin Has Friends in High Places

The episode reveals that Jake Griffin’s late father is a former partner of Benson’s new boss, Chief Kathryn Tynan, played by Noma Dumezweni. Griffin tells Benson that Tynan took him “under her wing” following his father’s death.

He immediately raises the concern to Benson that she might think he’s “some sort of spy” for Tynan due to his connection to the chief. He insists he’s just working under Benson to “learn how to become a good detective.”

While Benson gives him the benefit of the doubt, some other members of the “SVU” squad are not so certain.

“He’s got some powerful friends, so watch yourself,” Capt. Renee Curry (Aimé Donna Kelly) warns her colleagues.

Griffin’s Nickname Is ‘Batman’ on the Street

While he goes by “Griff” among his fellow officers, Griffin became known by another name during his time working as a cop on the street.

“I heard about this guy, they call him Batman,” Detective Terry Bruno (Kevin Kane) tells the rest of the squad.

“It’s a stupid nickname the mopes in Times Square used to call me,” Griffin insists.

An informant also refers to Griffin’s nickname later in the episode.

“Oh, Griffy, Griff, Griff,” he says. “Streets have been talking. They say you hung up your Batman wings?”

Griffin, in front of Bruno, tells the informant to be quiet.

Griffin Immediately Gets on Benson’s Nerves

Besides the nepotism connections, Griffin irks Benson with some of his investigation tactics.

After they visit a woman in the hospital who was drugged at a club, he declines to tell Benson at first about a tattoo on the victim’s wrist that provides a clue to the case. He also initially blocks the distraught victim from leaving the hospital room.

“This is what I was talking about when I said we work as one team,” an exasperated Benson later says to him about failing to tell her about the tattoo.

Griffin also has his co-workers rolling their eyes after he raises his hand to speak in squad meetings.

“Dude, if you raise your hand one more time, I’m going to shoot it off,” Bruno says.

Griffin later disobeys Benson’s orders for the squad to go home and doubles back to an illicit sex club they are trying to infiltrate. Benson labels him “a cowboy who makes decisions on his own.”

She says she’s going to call the chief and tell her about his behavior, and Griffin is able to dissuade her after explaining a break he got them in the case.

Griffin Might Actually Be a Spy for the Chief?

After he finds an employee in the club who helps crack the case, Griffin apologizes to Benson for going into the club on his own.

He promises never to go behind her back again.

However, the ending of the episode that aired on NBC differed from what’s shown now streaming on Peacock. At the end of the Peacock version, Griffin walks up to a brownstone, where he greets a man named John sitting in a truck outside.

“Good to see you,” Griffin tells him.

“Chief Tynan’s inside waiting for you,” John says.

Griffin thanks John and walks up the steps to the brownstone.

The ominous ending seems to imply that Griffin really is a mole for the chief inside “SVU,” but it’s not made clear.
