Law & Order: SVU Regular Since Season 1 Addresses the Hard Truth Behind Reduced Screen Time
Law & Order: SVU veteran Ice-T gets candid about his lighter Season 27 schedule and what it means for Sergeant Fin’s future.
If you’ve been watching Law & Order: SVU Season 27 and wondering where Sergeant Fin Tutuola has been hiding, you’re not alone. Ice-T, who’s been with the show since Season 2 back in 2000, has only appeared in four out of eight episodes this season, and we have definitely noticed.
The 25-year veteran of Dick Wolf’s longest-running procedural recently sat down with TMZ to spill the tea on what’s really going on behind the scenes, and let’s just say it’s all about the Benjamins.
Ice-T’s Reduced Screen Time: Budget Constraints Explained

Ice-T didn’t beat around the bush when explaining his lighter schedule this season. He said that the main culprit is the budget constraint tied to bringing back fan-favorite Kelli Giddish as Sergeant Amanda Rollins. Giddish returned as a series regular this season after lead star Mariska Hargitay campaigned hard for her comeback.
It’s just basically business,
Ice-T told TMZ.
They brought Kelli back. At the end of the day, they couldn’t keep both of us on full-time, as far as budget-wise.
The production informed him upfront that he’d be appearing sporadically throughout Season 27 to accommodate Giddish’s return, along with other new cast members.
Here’s a quick breakdown of Ice-T’s Season 27 appearances so far:
| Season 27 Statistics | Details |
| Total episodes aired (as of Nov 2025) | 8 episodes |
| Ice-T’s appearances | 4 episodes |
| Years on the show | 25 years (since 2000) |
| Status | Still series regular |
| Future plans | Aiming for Season 28 |
Naturally, Ice-T’s first question when producers approached him was whether he was being written off. The producers, who are well aware of the truth said,
No way. We can’t imagine Law & Order without you
(via TMZ). Like, where’s the lie in it?
Ice-T Eyes Law & Order: SVU Season 28 While Staying Positive

What’s refreshing is that Ice-T isn’t bitter about it at all. In fact, he’s looking at the bright side.
I’ve been on this show for 27 years. I’m not gonna say nothing negative about this show,
he emphasized in his interview with TMZ.
They’ve taken care of me for so long. I’m trying to get to Season 28.
The downtime has actually given the multihyphenate entertainer a chance to work on other projects, including new music. As he put it,
I’m a hustler. You give me some free time, I’ll find a free dime.
Ice-T even joked that he’s
kind of glad the fans are upset
because it shows people still care about Fin’s presence on the show. As for his relationship with Giddish, there’s zero tension there. Ice-T previously told TVLine that he
fell in love with Kelli as a person
when she joined the show in Season 13, calling her “dope” and celebrating her return. The cast shakeup also includes the departure of Juliana Aidén Martinez and Octavio Pisano at the end of Season 26, plus the promotion of Aimé Donna Kelly to series regular as Captain Curry.
